{"id":977,"date":"2010-04-04T11:42:46","date_gmt":"2010-04-04T16:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quackingalone.com\/blog\/?p=977"},"modified":"2010-04-04T11:51:56","modified_gmt":"2010-04-04T16:51:56","slug":"greys-from-post-its-to-pacifier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quackingalone.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/04\/greys-from-post-its-to-pacifier\/","title":{"rendered":"Grey&#8217;s: From Post-Its To Pacifiers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week two couples\u00a0on Grey's Anatomy were talkin' babies.\u00a0 Will it go beyond the talking stage?\u00a0 Will the stork\u00a0drop off a bundle or two\u00a0to some of Seattle Grace's finest?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, yeah, I know that when Ellen Pompeo was pregnant she and Patrick Dempsey sat down with Shonda Sunshine and suggested that Sunshine write the blessed event into the show. And yeah, I realize that Sunshine said no.\u00a0 I've heard that she's hinted\/said\/implied (take your pick) that there wouldn't be a McBaby.\u00a0 But I've heard other things too, and Sunshine does like to keep the fans guessing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recently, on the <a href=\"http:\/\/ausiellofiles.ew.com\/2010\/03\/25\/greys-anatomy-shonda-rhimes-spoilers\/\" target=\"_blank\">March 25th edition of the Ausiello Files<\/a>, Sunshine did a guest blog post about this season's finale.\u00a0 And she who created the McDreamy world says that it's \"the kind of finale that changes everything.\"\u00a0 She called it a \"GAME. CHANGER.\"\u00a0 Emphasis\u00a0and punctuation - Shonda's.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Anybody who's ever given birth knows that\u00a0one of those tiny little bundles of joy changes everything.\u00a0 Everything.\u00a0 A little babyfish gives a lot, but it takes a lot too.\u00a0 It takes your schedule and your sleep.\u00a0 America's favorite couple would find that their McBaby would\u00a0take away their\u00a0ability to stop by Joe's for a drink.\u00a0 No more\u00a0deciding at the last minute to run out and have a nice dinner. \u00a0\u00a0A little meal becomes a big production requiring either planning (a well-screened sitter) or packing (lots of baby gear) along with your patience and diplomacy (for fellow diners who don't find a whining infant soothing).\u00a0 And quick, romantic little weekend getaways?\u00a0 Gone baby, gone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But you know what?\u00a0 Here's a little secret that seems to have escaped the entire TV drama community - LIFE DOESN'T END WITH PARENTHOOD.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0lot of a couple's old way of life may end, but if they make the transition smoothly, then a new way of life, a better and more stable way of life, is just beginning.\u00a0 But\u00a0any couple making the change is gonna have a few little bumps along\u00a0the way.\u00a0 Mer\/Der?\u00a0 Nothing\u00a0has come easy to those two and \"the couple\" growing into \"the family\" would\u00a0require them to scale the Everest of challenges and cross the Grand Canyon of despair, of temptations, of lures to the dark side.\u00a0 But it would be a logical, a natural next step.<\/p>\n<p>I don't think any television drama has dealt well with a principal couple becoming parents.\u00a0 But in the traumas and triumphs\u00a0of that task, Sunshine could soar.\u00a0 With a busy surgeon and hospital administrator, there are problems of schedules and egos.\u00a0\u00a0How\u00a0could each of them hold onto a piece of themselves?\u00a0\u00a0What happens when they're both\u00a0dealing with last minute emergencies?\u00a0 Lately, Derek's fires have been administrative.\u00a0Mer's would be matters of life and death, of being in the midst of some surgery she couldn't walk away from without costing someone their life.\u00a0 That would require Der to surrender his\u00a0male ego and\u00a0be the one to walk away from the meeting to\u00a0get back to the little one.\u00a0 It would make Der jealous of Mer being in that surgery because at heart, Der's a surgeon, not a desk jockey.\u00a0 And a world class surgeon having to act like the \"little man\" would make Der prone to bask in the tempting adoration of an assistant with a big old crush, especially, since that assistant would remind him of the past.\u00a0 It would remind him of the old Mer\/Der days when he was still the man he knew.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He'd accuse Mer of turning into her mother.\u00a0 And no matter how much Mer tried, that vision would always be in her head.\u00a0 The vision of herself becoming\u00a0the best at what she did and the worst at what she was.\u00a0 Even if Der's temptation led to infidelity, Mer wouldn't walk away.\u00a0 Even if Mer crossed the line herself, she wouldn't walk away.\u00a0 After all, her mother walked away.<\/p>\n<p>So a baby would be a Game Changer for Mer\/Der sure enough.\u00a0 But a pregnancy would also be a\u00a0Game Changer.\u00a0 A troubled pregnancy would explain why Shonda said no to writing Ellen's real-life pregnancy into the show.\u00a0 Sunshine would never ask a healthy pregnant woman to court bad karma by playing an unhealthy pregnant woman.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First, just imagine a pregnant Mer.\u00a0 She's been a little too even-keeled, happy and whole lately now, hasn't she?\u00a0 What happened to the dark, twisted lass we all loved?\u00a0 We want\u00a0Mer happy, we just didn't want\u00a0her to lose everything that made so many of us identify with her, to find her real.\u00a0 Well, all the moods and hormones of pregnancy would bring back a\u00a0twistier Mer than we have (or Derek has)\u00a0ever seen.\u00a0 And Mer with a problem pregnancy that risked her life?\u00a0 DRAMA. CONFLICT.<\/p>\n<p>Both of the couple would fight for their baby.\u00a0 But when the risks became too high, Derek would choose Meredith.\u00a0 She'd never choose herself.\u00a0 Not after her Mama chose herself over and over.\u00a0 No, Mer would choose the baby.\u00a0 In a life or death showdown, the Post-It wedding wouldn't count to the Courts.\u00a0 The choice of Mer's life or her baby's would be in Mer's person's hands - Christina.\u00a0 And she'd normally choose Mer, sure enough.\u00a0 But she and Mer would have had\u00a0many long and angst-filled conversations on the subject. So Christina might\u00a0make the choice Mer wanted her to make, or at least, to be mightily\u00a0tempted to make that choice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And a troubled Mer pregnancy could well bring a number of\u00a0fine crossover opportunities with Private Practice.\u00a0 Addision here, stirring up the pot.\u00a0 Der in LA with old friends and an old lover.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So a baby would be a real Game Changer as would a pregnancy.\u00a0 Although I mostly concern myself with Mer\/Der, I'd throw in a note to speculate about\u00a0McSteamy impregnanting Callie (or Arizona - even more interesting) and then the interesting complications that would pose for\u00a0Calzona.\u00a0 And Sunshine mentioned Teddy fighting for her job.\u00a0 How would Burke's return rock Seattle Grace?\u00a0 The complications for Christina, Owen, and the challenge of Burke trying to work under McDreamy.\u00a0 Imagine.<\/p>\n<p>While we're imagining, there's another Game Changing\u00a0complication that was almost slipped under the radar this week.\u00a0 Derek's assistant Mercy Wester - April, I think - developed an oh-so-obvious crush on him this week.\u00a0 It's been heading at us for a while, ya know.\u00a0\u00a0And this week, it arrived.\u00a0 And arrived far too quietly.\u00a0 Maybe Sunshine doesn't want us to focus on it?\u00a0 She likes to surprise with her finales.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Well April has NEVER impressed me as the most stable gymnast on the balance beam.\u00a0 Let's say that\u00a0she wants Mer's place.\u00a0 Let's say her teetering sanity takes a tumble.... How could she get Mer's place?\u00a0 She could get\u00a0Mer out of the way.\u00a0 What an easy solution for a doctor in a hospital with access to a treasure trove of lovely drugs.\u00a0 She slips Mer something in her coffee, which Mer would drink unless her sister clues her in about April's crush.\u00a0 Then we have a last scene of Mer clutching her throat, losing her heartbeat, or gasping for breath as she reaches out for the nearby April, only to have April shake her off, make a few pithy comments about closets being good for things other than grubbing sessions with Derek.
