{"id":55,"date":"2009-02-24T19:10:09","date_gmt":"2009-02-25T00:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quackingalone.wordpress.com\/?p=55"},"modified":"2009-02-24T19:10:09","modified_gmt":"2009-02-25T00:10:09","slug":"lets-get-it-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quackingalone.com\/blog\/2009\/02\/24\/lets-get-it-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#039;s Get It On"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Or at least, let's get on with it!<\/p>\n<p>I've encountered\u00a0a problem with several recent books by romance writers whose work I adore.\u00a0 Too much back story.\u00a0 Not only do I want to meet the hero and heroine early on, I want them to meet each other.\u00a0 It's their interaction,\u00a0chemistry and\u00a0conflict that will drive me to read the book.\u00a0 I think of it as the Grey's Anatomy requirement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the pilot\u00a0episode of Grey's\u00a0some of the\u00a0first scenes were Mer\/Der.\u00a0\u00a0The emotions of that first meeting\u00a0have carried the show and\u00a0kept me watching\u00a0even when\u00a0the couple was apart.\u00a0 Because once they had the spark and sizzle, no matter who they're\u00a0with or what they're doing, the S&amp;S factor flavors every encounter.\u00a0 I give Shonda\u00a0Rhimes some props for kindling the fire and for being smart enough to keep the embers burning.<\/p>\n<p>That's what I want from my books.\u00a0 Even though Mer\/Der got to the grinding and grubbing right away, a literary\u00a0couple doesn't\u00a0have to (and I really, really hope they won't) sleep together in the first 10 or even the first 50 pages.\u00a0 By the time they have sex, I want to be emotionally invested.\u00a0 On the other hand, I don't want to be so tired of details and history and minutia that I'm too bored\u00a0to care much by the time they meet, greet and make it sweet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I'll take some\u00a0history if I have to, but first, I need a spoonful of S&amp;S to make it go down and keep me hanging around.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Or at least, let's get on with it!
