{"id":1060,"date":"2010-06-20T10:03:05","date_gmt":"2010-06-20T15:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quackingalone.com\/blog\/?p=1060"},"modified":"2010-06-20T10:24:32","modified_gmt":"2010-06-20T15:24:32","slug":"amazons-fubar-agitates-the-already-agitated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quackingalone.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/20\/amazons-fubar-agitates-the-already-agitated\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon&#8217;s FUBAR Agitates The Already Agitated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>God knows, I\u00a0understand that even in good times people need weekends to stay sane.\u00a0 In my world of today, which is\u00a0the polar opposite of \"good times,\" sanity is mostly a fond memory, but I still need my weekends.\u00a0 My family and that\u00a0little two-day break from work\u00a0are\u00a0the only things keeping me from jumping.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So I rarely\u00a0hope anybody else has their tailhook at their desk over a weekend, especially a holiday weekend.\u00a0 Rarely.\u00a0 But this weekend is an exception.\u00a0\u00a0 This weekend every darned programmer and web guru in the Amazonian Kingdom best be chained to their desks - including the fathers in the group.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0At least one of 'em deserves to be chained,\u00a0and with a big new system\u00a0change-over coming at the end of June where the whole staff is most likely working on bits and pieces of the new system, someone supervising the\u00a0chain-deserving code monkey didn't do his or her job.\u00a0\u00a0Somebody screwed up royally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amazon's DTP Platform\u00a0publishes Kindle pieces from indie authors and includes a dashboard to monitor\u00a0sales.\u00a0 The numbers don't go backwards unless there was a return or two OR\u00a0unless a code monkey didn't do his job right.\u00a0 Early\u00a0Thursday evening (June 17th) over about a two hour span, the DTP numbers of indie authors went backwards without any returns.\u00a0 Sales disappeared.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For many hours, nothing was heard but the weeping and gnashing of teeth of authors roaring their displeasure on the Kindle forum.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Oh - and the growling.\u00a0 Don't forget the growling.\u00a0 Amongst the indie authors are many folks, like me, who've found the \"hope\"\u00a0 hopeless and who've had enough\u00a0\"change\"\u00a0 to destroy their world.\u00a0 For us, every dollar counts and we don't appreciate seeing them swallowed by the great Amazon giant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I sent Amazon an email.\u00a0 As the hours stretched without a reply, I sent another.\u00a0 Judging from the Kindle forums, I wasn't alone.\u00a0\u00a0Enough of us may have sent emails to fill up the big, bad, Amazon mailbox.\u00a0\u00a0And all of us started to weave grand conspiracy theories.\u00a0 Nobody can\u00a0do conspiracy like a bunch of writers.\u00a0 \u00a0Finally, all the commotion got the Great One's attention.\u00a0 Either that or they wanted to get us to stop emailing.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon posted the following on the forums:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody><\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"3\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Posted By:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/forums.digitaltextplatform.com\/dtpforums\/profile.jspa?userID=1\">dtpadmin<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><strong>Created in:<\/strong> System: Global Announcement<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\"><strong>Posted:<\/strong> Jun 18, 2010 2:59 PM<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Dear Publishers,<\/p>\n<p>We are currently experiencing a reporting issue that is affecting the display of sales information on the \u201cmy reports\u201d page of our site. While recent sales may not be displayed correctly, we have verified sales are being recorded. Our engineers are working to have this corrected as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>We will post a follow up once we have confirmation this reporting issue has been remedied.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Note the date and time.\u00a0\u00a0The FUBAR Monster ate sales about 6 pm on Thursday, June 17th.\u00a0 Not a peep was heard from DTP until almost 3 pm on June 18th.\u00a0\u00a0And\u00a0we've been peepless since June 18th -\u00a0Friday afternoon.\u00a0 Today is Sunday, June 20th and the system has been down since early Thursday night.\u00a0 For nearly three days\u00a0it's been broken and as\u00a0I type, it remains broken.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What do I want them to post?\u00a0 First, I'd like an explanation that's better (and more HONEST) than \"glitch.\"\u00a0\u00a0 If it had been a \"glitch,\" it would have been fixed by Thursday night.\u00a0\u00a0A glitch is a little bump in the road that has\u00a0to be either smoothed over or navigated around.\u00a0\u00a0It doesn't take 3 days to fix a glitch.\u00a0 Somebody made a mammoth error - a FUBAR Gigantus.\u00a0\u00a0So I'd like Amazon to respect the writers enough to realize that most of us are quite bright.\u00a0 If they'll give an honest explanation of\u00a0what the Mammoth Error was and how it occurred we'll understand the process.\u00a0 If they'll tell us what they were\u00a0trying to do or achieve at the time, we might even be able to summon a little understanding and tolerance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I'd also like Amazon to post details about what they're doing -- exactly and not generally --\u00a0\u00a0to fix the error.\u00a0 We've got enough computer geeks on the forum that they might be able to contribute helpful ideas and suggestions.\u00a0 I've got a geek in my house and if Amazon would post details, Mr. Quack could probably help them navigate around their Everest Error.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most helpful of all would be pictures or real time video SHOWING that the entire programming staff at Amazon is at their desks, working like the Dickens' and won't be allowed to leave until they get it right.\u00a0 I want to know that when there is a crisis that the staff was\u00a0not allowed to walk out on Friday afternoon and say\u00a0they'd be right on top of it - first thing Monday.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because I can't do that and I expect you can't do that either.\u00a0 At my law firm, when there is a deadline or a problem we have to work until the job is done, regardless of whether it's a Saturday or a Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I'd like them to post something showing a little bit of a sense of humor.\u00a0 Print a picture of Paul chained to his desk and sitting on a\u00a0potty chair.\u00a0 Say - this is Code Monkey Paul.\u00a0 He had a small tweak to make to the system that he should have made in the test environment.\u00a0 He should then have debugged it and run data through until it was right and he knew it was right.\u00a0 ONLY THEN should it have\u00a0been moved to the live environment.\u00a0 But Paul had an important poker game with the boys on Thursday\u00a0night and\u00a0he wanted to get out.\u00a0 It was already 6 o'clock so he said, screw it, and moved the code over without testing it properly.\u00a0\u00a0 Paul is paying for that choice now.\u00a0 Paul will be here, on the job, around the clock until he gets it right.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don't get me wrong - I LOVE CODE MONKEYS.\u00a0 I'm married to a code monkey.\u00a0 My hubby can make an IBM AS400 stand up and say\u00a0\"Who's Your Daddy?\"\u00a0 But these days he's working hard at a part time job\u00a0in a PC environment that doesn't involve what he's been trained to do.\u00a0 His current part time gig does nothing to remind him of how damned good he is at what he does.\u00a0 He's one of the best RPG Code Monkeys in the jungle, but right now there are too many code monkeys chasing the jobs.\u00a0 So he's surviving.\u00a0 He's taking a certification course that in August will allow him to get out there and get the kind of good job he should have had all along.\u00a0 He's working\u00a0hard for his family, trying to get\u00a0skills that in a couple of months will get him a good job and take some of the stress off of me and that will hopefully help us get back on track.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Mr. Quack is a survivor and in today's market, that's what you damned well have to be.<\/p>\n<p>What my hubby is going through, and what\u00a0many other talented computer folks out there are\u00a0going through is a mental image that never leaves my mind as I think about Amazon's\u00a0FUBAR.\u00a0\u00a0All of the Code Monkeys like Mr. Quack are the reason that I want proof that Amazon's pack of monkeys know how incredibly lucky they are to have their jobs and that they have been there every single second since 6 pm on Thursday working to get\u00a0it right.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah - throw Paul the Code Monkey a box of bananas every now and then, but keep him right there at his desk doing his job until it's done.\u00a0 Because on this Father's Day there are too many Fathers who are older, experienced professionals who would be right there until they got it right.\u00a0 Unfortunately, in this job market work ethic has become as lost as\u00a0hiring the experienced professionals who'd have gotten it right the first time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So yeah, Amazon, you'd best be working around the clock to fix the FUBAR.\u00a0 It best not \"magically\" adjust on Monday morning.\u00a0 To the Senior Staff at the internet giant, I say,\u00a0look very carefully at what happened, how it happened and how hard your team is working to fix it.\u00a0 Because if we get a Monday morning miracle, Amazon's HR folks should be posting \"help wanted\" notices saying they're looking for seasoned, experienced professionals -
